State Freestyle and Greco Championships get solid turnout as NYs best begin to prepare for Fargo

Congratulations to all wrestlers who competed at the New York State Championships this past weekend at Broome CC. On display was some great wrestling. Up for grabs was qualifying for the National Cadet/Junior Freestyle and Greco Championships. Upon leaving for home Sunday afternoon, I ws told that well over 100 wrestlers have signed up and are looking to compete in Fargo. This is Great News!
I would like to thank all the coaches, parents and wrestlers for their combined efforts. Our total number of wrestlers competing was just slightly higher than last year, however, that stopped a declining trend. Parents and Coaches are the backbone of our sport. I want to personally thank them for taking a Friday off and paying the expense of a weekend competition. The opportunity provided to the wrestlers can lead to great experiences and performances.
To the wrestlers, I say BRAVO. NY has talent and it was easy to spot over the weekend. Thank you for dreaming, training and competing to achieve your dreams. It is the State's job, my responsibility, to provide you all with an opportunity to take your wrestling to the next level. All of you who competed have taken the first steps. Congratulations and Thank You for your efforts. One thing, IT'S NOT OVER!!!!!
State Coach Joe DeMeo distributed handouts with training suggestions to prepare yourselves for the mini camps and July final training camp in Johnson City, NY.  Take his advice, take a look and prepare yourselves. The mini camps are to learn techniques that you need to succeed. The final camp is about sparring and tactics. Being prepared through training before the camps is essential in understanding the techniques and being physically and mentally prepared for Fargo. Remember how you felt Sunday morning at States getting ready to wrestle at 8am, for some of you the 3rd day of wrestling?? If your dreams are to do well in Fargo, be ready for that same feeling. The greater the prize, the greater the effort needed. I'm proud of all of you. Good luck.
Parents and Coaches should also take equal pride. I met many Coaches and Parents who traveled with wrestlers. Your efforts make it all possible for these fine athletes. Please keep them involved and training. It is my/State's hope to provide learning and competitive experiences for all wrestlers in NY to reach their goals. The everyday efforts you provide make all the difference. Last year some club coaches got together and ran a dual tournament. This year Shenendehowa and Sayville ran dual events. It was no surprise to me and these coaches to see the Teams that were in these events did very well at States. It is my hope to continue to communicate and be involved with different clubs across the State. It makes sense on 2 levels. Get experience to those who are inexperienced so they can build a style. For the more experienced wrestler, provide the challenges that produce the experiences to take it to a higher level. It is my hope to add another dual event next year. Thank you Parents. Thank you Coaches.
FYI, The first mini camp falls on the weekend of the NE Regionals. June 3-5. If you have not qualified for Fargo, the Regionals are your next option. If you are competing, don't worry about the camp. If you have qualified, the Staff would like you at the mini-camp to start the process for Fargo. There is no penalty for missing the camp. Certainly some wrestlers will miss for various reasons; some good, some bad. What you need to ask is, did I miss an opportunity to improve myself? See you at the camps!
Thank you to everyone involved with the State Championships. Well Done!
