West Sayville, NY - 1/22/10

After a grueling start to the 2009/2010 season, Sayville is on a roll. They have now won 6 in a row, including two milestone victories. Sayville defeated Islip for the first time in 20 or more years and Huntington for only the 3rd time in program history. Islip and Huntington are two of the most successful wrestling programs in the United States. Collectively, they have won 5 team state titles between 2000 and 2009 and have been nationally ranked several times during that span.

In the early part of the season, the Golden Flashes embarked on the toughest schedule in New York State. This is to prepare them for their league dual docket where 7 of the 8 teams that compete in it are ranked among the top 40 in New York State. It is widely known around the wrestling community as the hardest local HS league in New York and certainly one of the most competitive in the country.  If you make it in League V, you can truly make it anywhere. Many of the top wrestlers out of 650 high school in NY compete on a weekly basis in this League or L5 as it is known.

Sayville has won 2 tournaments this season. They were team champions of the Valley Stream North Tournament & Bayport -Blue Point Dual Meet Tournament. They finished 3rd in the early season, Sayville tournament and 20th out of 75 teams at the Eastern States Classic. Their top 20 finish at the Eastern States is astounding for a small school where 75 of the top high school teams in the North East compete. It is made up of teams from 6 different states

Each of the Golden Grapplers are picking up steam with the hopes of peaking come League, County and State Championship time. Sayville has 4 wrestlers ranked among the best in New York State and several others knocking on the door. This includes the Sayville version of murderers row in the middle (Pitre; Leshinger; Cone & Haas). It is tough for opponents to make a lineup card against that imposing force. Wow!

·         Matt Leshinger (Freshman), Ranked 4th New York State @ 96#
·         Travis Pitre (Senior), Ranked 6th New  York State @ 135#
·         Jody Haas (Senior), Ranked 8th New York State @ 145#
·         Steven Leshinger (Junior), Ranked 6th Section XI @ 140#

Nearly every one of the 13 starters has a chance to reach 20 wins on the season. This would be a new program record.

Please come out and support the Golden Flashes as they honor their graduating wrestlers on Senior night. Travis Pitre; Zach Cone; Jody Haas; John Allegro; Andrew Gotay & Christian “Bubba” Nelson will all be missed.

Sayville looks to make beat the Tornadoes of Harborfields HS for the 4th consecutive year in a row @ SHS on 1/22 @ 4 PM on Senior Night.
